Audi MMI to USB Cable Interface – AMI/MDI Adapter
£81.43
Audi AMI/MDI to female USB-A cable for playing music from compatible USB storage devices, charging a smartphone and connecting supported USB flash drives or external HDDs. Compatible with Audi MMI 2G, MMI 3G and MMI 3G Plus systems equipped with the required AMI port, as well as selected Volkswagen vehicles with MDI.
Audi MMI to USB Cable Interface
Add a standard USB-A connection to a compatible Audi Music Interface — AMI — or Volkswagen Media Device Interface — MDI.
This physical adapter cable allows you to connect compatible USB flash drives, external storage devices and smartphones to the vehicle’s factory multimedia interface. Depending on the connected device and infotainment configuration, the USB connection can be used for music playback, phone charging or supported Audi MMI map-update media.
Main functions
The adapter can be used to:
- Play compatible music files from a USB flash drive
- Connect a supported external HDD
- Charge a smartphone or another USB-powered device
- Connect supported USB media containing Audi MMI map-update files
- Add a female USB-A connection to a compatible Audi AMI or Volkswagen MDI port
The cable does not add Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or Bluetooth connectivity.
Audi MMI compatibility
The cable is intended for compatible Audi vehicles equipped with a factory AMI port and one of the following infotainment systems:
- Audi MMI 2G
- Audi MMI 3G Basic
- Audi MMI 3G High
- Audi MMI 3G Plus
Compatibility depends on the presence of the correct AMI connector. The MMI generation alone does not guarantee that the required port is installed.
If you are unsure what Audi Music Interface is or where to find it, read our AMI guide:

You can also identify your installed MMI version using this guide:
Volkswagen MDI compatibility
The adapter can also be used with selected Volkswagen Group vehicles equipped with a compatible factory Media Device Interface — MDI.
Before ordering, inspect the multimedia socket in the glovebox, centre console or armrest. It must match the AMI/MDI connector shown in the product photographs.
A standard USB socket, AUX input or SD card slot is not the same as an AMI/MDI port.
Music playback from USB
Connect a compatible USB flash drive containing supported audio files and select the appropriate AMI, MDI, Media or external audio source through the infotainment system.
Available playback functions depend on the MMI version, connected storage device, file format and vehicle configuration. Some configurations may not display complete track information or provide full control through the MMI controls.
For the best compatibility:
- Use a commonly supported USB flash drive
- Format the storage device using a file system supported by the vehicle
- Organise music into clearly named folders
- Avoid unsupported audio formats
- Allow the MMI time to index a large music library
Smartphone charging
The USB socket can supply power to a compatible smartphone or another USB-powered device.
Charging speed depends on the vehicle’s AMI/MDI system, the connected device and its power requirements. This is a factory-interface adapter and should not be treated as a modern high-power USB-C fast charger.
Audi map updates using USB or an external HDD
The adapter can be used to connect supported USB storage media or an external HDD containing compatible Audi MMI map-update files.
The cable itself does not include:
- Navigation maps
- Firmware files
- Activation codes
- Navigation licences
- Update scripts
Map installation depends on the installed MMI system, region, software version and the selected update package. Not every Audi MMI update uses USB media, so always follow the instructions supplied with the relevant update.

Check before ordering
Before purchasing, confirm:
- The vehicle has a factory Audi AMI or Volkswagen MDI port
- The connector matches the plug shown in the product images
- Your USB device uses a compatible format and file system
- The selected MMI update supports USB or external-HDD media if you intend to use the cable for an update
