Three Details You Must Check

1. Software train

Check the complete version, including identifiers such as BNav, HNav, HN+, RMC, MHI2, MHI2Q, MHS2, MH2p or MHI3.

2. Hardware platform

Similar Audi models can use different infotainment hardware. A matching model and year do not confirm firmware compatibility.

3. Region

Confirm whether the unit uses European, North American, ROW, Japanese, Korean, Chinese or another regional software train.

Important: Never install firmware solely because its version number appears newer. Firmware intended for another platform or region can cause update errors, unavailable functions or an inoperative MMI unit.

What Can a Compatible Firmware Update Do?

A suitable release may resolve software problems covered by that firmware version.

Improve stability

Some updates address restarting, freezing or communication issues affecting compatible units.

Meet update requirements

Certain navigation packages or procedures require a specific minimum firmware version.

Firmware does not automatically add navigation maps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or every feature available in newer Audi models.

Firmware and Navigation Maps Are Different

Firmware updates the operating software of the infotainment unit. Navigation maps update the geographical database used for route guidance.

A firmware-only product does not include maps unless they are explicitly listed in the package contents. Not every map update requires new firmware.

  • Check that the firmware region matches the unit.

  • Maintain a stable vehicle power supply throughout the update.

No. Compatibility must be confirmed using the complete software train, hardware platform and region.

Does a firmware update include navigation maps?

Only when maps are explicitly listed in the product contents. A firmware-only product does not include navigation data.

Will firmware activate Apple CarPlay or Android Auto?

Not automatically. Compatible hardware may require a separate activation procedure, licence or USB configuration.

Can I install European firmware on a North American unit?

Not as a standard update. Regional conversion requires files and instructions prepared for the exact MMI platform.

Do I need new firmware before installing maps?

Only when the selected map package specifies a minimum firmware version.

How is the firmware delivered?

Delivery depends on the product and may include a digital download, prepared SD card or another physical update medium.
