Updating navigation maps on Audi MMI 3G High and MMI 3G Plus requires more than simply copying new files to an SD card.
The correct procedure depends on the exact MMI generation, current firmware, navigation region and map package.
This guide is specifically for:
- MMI 3G High – software trains beginning with HNav_
- MMI 3G Plus – software trains beginning with HN+_ or HN+R_
If your software version begins with BNav_, you have MMI 3G Basic and should use our separate MMI 3G Basic map update guide.
If your system uses MHI2, MHI2Q, MHS2, MH2p or MHI3, this is not the correct map installation procedure.
Before starting, identify your exact MMI system and record both the firmware version and navigation database version.

Check Whether You Have MMI 3G High or MMI 3G Plus
If you already own the maps update files and you are ready to install, you can jump straight to the installation manual by clicking here.
We also have a video tutorial
First of all, you have to recognise which MMI your car have.
The best way it’s just to go to the Engineering menu and check the current firmware version.
You can enter there by pressing the CAR and SETUP (or sometimes MENU or BACK) buttons in your MMI console.
This video might be also useful

When you are in the engineering menu, you will see screen like above.
Most Trans it’s your current MMI version.
There’s few different MMI versions.

When you are in Engineering Menu you can now recognise your MMI, so:
- MMI 2G: SW: XX-XX XX.X.X XXXX
- MMI 3G Low/Basic: BNav_XX_XXXXX
- MMI 3G High: HNav_XX_XXXXX
- MMI 3G+: HN+_XX_XXXXX or HN+R
- MMI RMC: RMC_XX_XXXXX
This guide continues only if your software version starts with:
HNav_ = MMI 3G High
HN+_ = MMI 3G Plus
HN+R_ = MMI 3G Plus
If you see BNav_, RMC_, MHI2_, MHI2Q_, MHS2_, MH2p_ or another prefix, stop here and use the installation procedure written for that platform.
Once you know your exact MMI version, check whether your current firmware is compatible with the map release you want to install.

The screenshot above shows an example navigation database version. Your version number will depend on the region and map release currently installed.
How to Choose the Correct Maps for MMI 3G High or 3G Plus
MMI 3G High and MMI 3G Plus do not use the same navigation packages.
Always match the map package to:
- the MMI generation,
- the navigation region,
- the current firmware level,
- and the activation method required by that release.
Typical regions include:
- ECE – Europe
- NAR – USA / Canada / Mexico
- ROW – Rest of World
- ME – Middle East
- AU/NZ – Australia / New Zealand
- South Africa
Do not choose a map update only by Audi model or model year.
Two cars of the same model can have completely different MMI systems.
Check compatible updates:
https://mmiupdates.com/check-upgrade/
If you now know what’s your current maps version and type of MMI, you can download maps from here!
But please be careful, because different MMI systems has a different map updates.
If you have MMI 3G PLUS you have to looking for MMI 3G Plus maps, similar for MMI 3G High and Basic. All maps are selling separately on our website.
Important: Verify the Update Package Before Installation
Do not install navigation files from an unknown or unverified source.
A damaged, incomplete or incompatible package can cause the update to fail and may leave the navigation database unusable.
Before installation, confirm that:
- all archive parts were downloaded,
- extraction completed without errors,
- the map package matches your MMI generation,
- the region is correct,
- and the required activation method is compatible with your system.

How to Prepare the SD Card for an MMI 3G Map Update
Map packages may be supplied as a multi-part 7-Zip archive, for example:
maps.7z.001
maps.7z.002
maps.7z.003
maps.7z.004
Download every part and place all files in the same folder.
Start extraction from the .7z.001 file only. 7-Zip will automatically read the remaining parts.
After extraction, copy the contents of the extracted map folder directly to the root of the SD card.
Do not copy the parent folder itself.
When you receive download links from mmiupdates.com to download maps, you will see something like this:

Download one by one!
when you get all files, please unpack only first one 7z.001 with 7zip!

Other files will join automatically!
Extract downloaded files – how to do? Click here – there’s a complete guide how to deal with downloaded files.
Format your SD CARD as FAT32.
Copy the root of your maps on the SD card (like picture below).
Preparing the SD Card on macOS
macOS can create additional hidden metadata files such as .DS_Store and resource-fork files.
If you prepare the SD card on a Mac, make sure the card contains only the files required by the update package before inserting it into the MMI.
Windows or a cleanly prepared FAT32 card is generally the simplest option.
When you have unpacked files with maps go inside created folder and you might see something like on the screenshot bellow.
Keep in mind the file list might be different for EU and USA / Canada so do not count the files etc.
and copy all those files directly on to SDCARD, without parent folder like 6.30.1 or 6.19.1 or other name..

Recommended SDCARDs for Map updates we described in F.A.Q here. When you prepared your SD CARD you can jump to the car and follow rest of this manual.
How to remove old nav database?
Optional: Removing the old map is optional. However, is highly recommendable.
Benefits are:
- Possibly avoid the Fault Code 03175 – Invalid Data Set error
- Avoid errors while copying the map (out of size, slow write speed)
- There are no files of the old map into the new map
Open Green Menu (Press CAR and MENU and hold it)
How to enable hidden green menu – tutorial you can find here!

Go to nav/databaseupdate
Select “Delete database (will need reboot)” and click it.

Wait until system removes the data.

When it finished. Reboot your MMI using the 3 buttons

In Audi A8 it’s a bif different MMI reboot: big button, upper right silver and tone

User Defined mode
Therefore, it is necessary to push a “User defined mode” installation mode,
– To activate this mode (it’s disabled by default), you must go to the green menu.

GREEN MENU: Press and hold MENU + TEL or MENU + CAR or TONES + CAR, depending on the model.
** Then go to the SWDL section:

Map installation
Install the Navigation Maps
Before continuing:
- confirm that the correct map package is on the SD card,
- make sure the MMI has fully booted,
- ensure stable vehicle voltage,
- and do not remove the SD card during installation.
The map installation can take a long time. The exact duration depends on the map release, region and MMI hardware.
Open “Engineering Menu” by pressing the CAR button and immediately after the BACK button. Hold booth buttons pressed for a few seconds.
The following screen will appear.

Insert the SD card with the map in slot SD 1
Press the “Update” option using the MMI Control Panel.

Scroll down with the big knob and select the source in the menu (SD 1 in our case).

Select the map by pressing the big knob once.

select “User Defined” (remember? we have enabled this).

Go to the menu AUDI_MMI3G_ECE ->in each sub folder set the check box so that in front of all sub-feet Y
- for US and other will be similar AUDI_MM3G_NAR.
- Australia & New Zealand AUDI_MMI3G_AN.
- South Africa Audi_MMO3G_SA.
- Rest Of World AUDI_MMI3G_ROW.
- Middle East AUDI_MMI3G_ME2.
- Europe AUDI_MMI3G_ECE
- Singapore AUDI_MMI3G_SN
Please also make sure that:
- Mapstyles,
- Navipersistence,
- TMCConfig (this might be N/A in USA/Canada/Mexico cars and do not worry if you can’t select this!)
are also selected to update.

Manually select the entire item (without bootloader)
In the MMI section AUDI_MMI3G_XXX
XXX – depends on region, can be:
- ECE for Europe,
- ME2 for Middle East,
- NAR for USA / Canada & Mexico
- SA for South Africa
- SM for Singapore
- ROW for Rest of World

Then please go back, and scroll to the bottom.
Press “Start update” and then “Start”.

The installation may take around an hour or longer depending on the navigation package and system.
Allow the process to complete and do not interrupt power.
Device Summary screen is displayed in the subsequent overview screen.

Scroll down and select “Continue“.

Because you don’t have connection to Audi SVM you have to “Cancel documentation” here. This is the reason for ECU ERROR 03276 Please Check Software Version Management in 5F Information Electr.

Cancelling SVM documentation can result in fault code:
03276 – Please Check Software Version Management
This does not mean that the navigation map installation itself failed.
If the error appears, use our dedicated guide:
How to Activate MMI 3G Navigation Maps
Map installation and map activation are two separate stages.
Some MMI 3G map packages require a compatible navigation licence or activation procedure before the newly installed maps can be used normally.
The activation method must match the MMI system, firmware and map release.
Do not use an activation file intended for a different firmware or navigation platform.
Caution: Do NOT insert the SD until MMI has fully booted you can brick your unit!
Caution: Please double check that you’re using the correct license for your firmware, using incorrect activator will result in a bricked (dead) MMI unitFormat your SD in FAT32.

Copy the root of your license in to the clear SD card – it has to be formatted to FAT32!
If you bought maps update from us, the license is in license.zip file.
Make sure that MMI is fully booted – after final reboot!
(press all buttons once RADIO, CAR, NAV, MEDIA, TEL).
Wait until all options are ok (no options in grey) even when all options are ok wait a minute more.
Latest firmware and maps – must be already installed
Insert the SD card into the 1st MMI slot.
Wait for ~ 15 seconds, if everything is done according to the instructions, MMI will show you instructions what to do next. If it doesn’t work, eject the SD CARD and try in second slot.
After maps activation you need to fully reboot your mmi. (Please be aware that turning ignition off / on will not reboot MMI!)

Whether activation needs to be repeated depends on the MMI firmware, previous licence state and the map package being installed.
Follow the activation instructions supplied with the specific update rather than assuming that an existing licence will always remain valid.
Audi RSE – Rear Seat Entertainment Map Update
If you own an Audi car with RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment) it also has to be updated, the whole procedure looks the same like for main MMI unit, there are just different buttons combination.

And you can follow rest of installation which looks the same as for front MMI unit. Just keep in mind there’s a different buttons combinations.
Can I Use a USB Drive Instead of an SD Card?
On some MMI 3G configurations, USB media can be accessed through a compatible MMI-to-USB interface.
However, SD card installation is the standard method used in this guide.
Use USB only when the hardware and update procedure you are using explicitly support it.
What to Check After the Map Update
After the MMI has rebooted, check:
- the navigation database version,
- GPS position,
- route calculation,
- map rendering,
- voice guidance,
- TMC / traffic information where supported,
- navigation licence status,
- and any new fault codes in module 5F.
Open:
Setup MMI → Version Information
and verify that the new navigation database version is displayed.
If the maps load but become blocked after a few minutes, check the navigation activation before reinstalling the complete map package.

I managed to get it all done with no real issues and it says its the updated version. Once I quit trying to answer the phone by touching the answer button on the screen it worked much better too. The VW had a touch screen….
Thanks for the tutorials and the good instructions. Everything worked according to plan and the bose stereo still works, I deleted the old maps and the only confusing thing is that the activation card never brought up anything on the screen but apparently I missed something. The mmi rebooted after the card had been in the slot for about 30 seconds and everything works.
Thanks
TJ
I have bought an Audi tt 2016 and it is writing to me the navigation system is not installed,
if i install maps will it work ?
As an update to my last comment, I was able to activate the map license and see all the new maps. The update in total was not difficult but took some time. Audi connect now shows in the menu. Completely satisfied with the install and purchase.
I have been used to the Audi connect app while navigating long distances solo in the last year and a half. Unfortunately I’m losing access to my SIM card connection (3g) and the dealer has no solution. I bought the package, updated slowly, and found the updates quite rewarding. Somehow I missed the license activation and will work on that next. Everything else is a big improvement, and the new maps are considerably improved for the two minutes I can see them (11 hour drive today). I will not give up the TDI with towing package even though diesel was $5.09 today.
I’m installing Nav DB 6.22.1 (prior version is 5.6.5). Text above recommends deleting database, but video says delete database AND delete NAV HDD partition.
Which is correct?
I have HN+R, 6.22 1 and do not the need firmware update (previously had 946)
Used Green Menu to select user defined, Did not delete the previous 6.10.2, Nav maps but am installing on top of them.
When upgrading Nowhere does the Audi 3G settings offer that choice,,
I have no, “Go to the menu AUDI_MMI3G_ECE” Their is nothing that says Audi.
Also I do not have the Navipersistence selection.
Proceeding with Mapstyles, TMCConfig, Gemini, AH6, set all “application” to YES
Hit update, rebooted twice, and now nothing, waiting for system to come back up 2hrs now.
Please tell me It’s not bricked 😪
Everything went smooth. Firmware and map updates without problems. Thanks!!
I need your support. On Aug 27 I purchased the Firmware & Maps bundle for my Audi Q7 2011 Order#37667. Below are all the details and description of the problem. PLEASE HELP.
Car:2011 Audi Q7 with Bose system
Previous: HNav_US_P0114_D1 and 8R0060884 NAR 5.4.7
New Software bundle bought: 6.22.1 & K0133_3_D1
First problem I encountered was that the firmware update showed BoseG3_Q7 with an “S” and didn’t allow me to change it to “N”. Up to this point I had followed all the instructions. I then bought and installed the optical loop and proceeded to update the firmware and maps; however, I am now encountering the following problems:
Problem 1: when I go to the navigation the map appears and after a couple of minutes the system says “Navigation data is blocked” I read your instructions so many times and uploaded the Activation files successfully, but i am still getting the error.
Hello, I have installed everything as manual and this installed new maps and new firmware. but after 5 minutes maps are blocked, the activation files do not activate maps. I put sd with files licensed but not active on sd1 and sd2. What I can do?
hello can solve my problem please i did all procedures but in the end the navigation show like if i am in desert without any destination info 🙁
Great so far. Went from HN+_US_AU3G_P0566 (FW) and 8R0060884AM NAR 5.6.5 (Maps) to HN+_US_AU3G_K0942_6/8R0060884HG NAR 6.22.1. I only had *2* hiccups:
(1) The maps installation instructions called out to make sure that you set the subnodes of TMCConfig to ‘Y’, my MMI wouldn’t let me. TMCConfig was in the list, however when I went in it and tried to check the checkbox, it wouldn’t check it. So I just skipped that one.
(2) The license activation didn’t spin up a screen like the instructions call out. It just caused an MMI reboot after 15ish seconds. After that, I drove around the block for 10+ minutes, testing out GPS and navigation, and all seems to be working.
If anyone else has experienced the above (this was done on a 2013 Audi S5 coupe) I would love to hear what your experiences were. I’m going to let it “bake for a day”, and if no issues arise, I’ll be doing the same update on my 2014 Q5.
Thanks! Great time *and* money saver!
Updated! ^.^ thanks.
Just tried that, it is now stuck on “initialising navigation screen…. please wait
