Audi MMI 3G US to EU Conversion – Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Before You Start – This Guide Is Only for MMI 3G

This tutorial covers USA / North America to Europe conversion for Audi MMI 3G systems, including:

  • HNav_ – MMI 3G High
  • HN+_ – MMI 3G Plus
  • HN+R_ – MMI 3G Plus used in selected Audi models

This guide does NOT apply to:

  • MHI2_
  • MHI2Q_
  • MHS2_
  • MH2p_
  • MHI3_
  • MST2_
  • RMC_

MIB1, MIB2 and MIB3 region conversions use different procedures.

Before changing firmware, EEPROM, navigation region or radio configuration, check the complete software version of your MMI.

What Does a Full MMI 3G US to EU Conversion Change?

A complete conversion can involve several separate elements:

  1. MMI language / regional configuration
  2. Firmware compatibility
  3. Navigation region
  4. European navigation database
  5. Map activation
  6. Radio frequency configuration

Simply installing European maps does not automatically convert the complete MMI from North America to Europe.

Likewise, simply flashing European firmware onto a US unit is not always sufficient.

Step 1 – Understand the EEPROM Language Difference

A full US to EU firmware conversion can require changes to the MMI EEPROM language configuration.

North American MMI 3G units typically contain language configuration intended for the US market, while European units contain European language data.

Because of this, installing European firmware directly onto a US-configured unit without the required EEPROM preparation can result in missing or incorrectly displayed text on the MMI screen.

This is why EEPROM preparation is an important part of a true firmware-region conversion.

Do not modify EEPROM data unless you understand the procedure and have a verified backup.

Basically US cars has information only about:

  • US english
  • Spanish – US version (a bit different than in Europe, only in firmware code).
EEPROM - Languages US version.
EEPROM – Languages US version.

where EU cars might have informations about all European languages except above

EEPROM - Languages EU version.
EEPROM – Languages EU version.

If you decide only reinstall firmware from Europe version on US version you will do that… but, you will don’t see any types of font / words on mmi screen, as it has coded only US languages, not Europeans.

So, to install EU firmware on US cars, EEPROM language section has to be modified.

But..

Alternative – European Maps Without a Full Firmware Conversion

A full EEPROM and firmware conversion is not always required if your main goal is only to use European navigation maps.

On supported MMI 3G systems, it can be possible to keep:

  • US firmware
  • US English language

while changing the navigation region and installing compatible European map data.

This is different from a complete US → EU firmware conversion.

If you do not need European MMI languages or a complete firmware-region change, this route can be simpler.

There’s another way to install Europe maps on US cars without changing language in EEPROM – but you will stay with US english language & US firmware!.

You will need to install latest US firmware. Installation procedure we describe HERE, there’s nothing else to do. If you have bose system, you will need unselect it for update (described in tutorial).

Full conversion packs:

After successfully firmware upgrade, you will need to enable Hidden green menu (how to do it, described here).

In Green menu, you have to go to the: SWDL, and enable:

  • User defined mode.
  • Ignore region and variant.
Hidden green menu > SWDL section

After that we need to change the region. So in Hidden Green Menu go to the: System > Internal

MMI 3G Region change
Hidden Green Menu > MMI 3G Region change

and select there EU

Then go to the: Nav -> databaseupdate And Change your “Active HDD Nav DB” to the region/country of your choice in our case: EU.

MMI 3G Region change
Hidden Green Menu > MMI 3G Region change

List of regions:

  1. Unknown
  2. Default
  3. EU
  4. North America
  5. South America
  6. AGCC
  7. Korea
  8. Japan
  9. China
  10. Asia Pacific
  11. South Africa
  12. Australia (New Zealand)
  13. India
  14. Taiwan (ROC)
  15. AGCC_2 (arabic)
  16. Turkey
  17. Chile
  18. no navi db

After that, you can perform with maps update using our tutorial, click here to get there.

Full conversion packs:

Please remember to remove old nav database and nav partition (everything is described in tutorials).

There will be one more thing to do, change radio frequencies to work with EU. To do this you can use OBDeleven, just find and click option to modify radio frequencies.

I hope this tutorial will help you with US conversion. IF any questions just ask in comment 🙂

Hello, that’s current version of firmware from my Q5 FY 2018 – MHI2_US_AUG22_P3252.

If I want to update current version (without conversion), should I use MHI2_US_AUG22_K3347_MU1439_PATCH?

And I suppose that if I want to make US-EU conversion, I can’t use MHI2_US_AUG22_K3347_MU1439_PATCH?

If so, what should I install? Is there any firmware to install (to convert it from US to EU), or should I flash eeprom?

Hello, I updated the US firmware, installed EU maps, activated them and now the navigation itself works, I can enter destination and it navigates me but I see black screen in the background instead of the map. Any idea what have I missed?

I have in plan to do conversion HN+US_AU3G_P0566. What is not clear for me why packages for conversion contain again firmware US and not EU. So thats mean we will after modification of EEPROM and settings in green menu again install just US fw ? or it is possible also EU FW ?
