Keeping the infotainment system in an Audi A5 up to date is not simply a matter of downloading the newest file available.
The A5 has been on the market for many years and, depending on generation, production date, equipment level and sales region, it can be equipped with several completely different Audi infotainment platforms.
An early Audi A5 may still use MMI 2G High, while later B8 and B8.5 cars commonly feature MMI 3G Basic, MMI 3G High or MMI 3G Plus. Newer A5 models moved to MHS2, MIB2 High and eventually MIB3.

The model year alone does not reliably identify an Audi infotainment system.
It is perfectly possible to find two Audi A5 vehicles from a similar production period with different MMI hardware and therefore completely different update requirements.
What matters is the full software train version displayed by the unit.

Adding CarPlay and Android Auto to Audi A5 MMI 3G
One of the biggest limitations of the original MMI 3G platform is the lack of modern smartphone integration.
There is no native software-only CarPlay activation for MMI 3G comparable to MIB2.
Instead, an additional interface can be connected to the original Audi system.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interface for Audi MMI 3G
It can be used with compatible:

MIB2 differs from MMI 3G in one important way:
having the map files does not automatically mean the head unit has permission to use them.

Which Audi A5 update should you buy?
In practice, Audi A5 owners usually fall into one of three situations.
The firmware is outdated
Choose a firmware update if:
- the vehicle still runs an early software release;
- a newer map or activation requires a newer firmware baseline;
- you need to bring the MMI to a supported version before another modification.
Only the navigation is outdated
A map-only package may be enough when:
- the existing firmware is already suitable;
- the navigation database is old;
- the required activation or map entitlement is already installed.
Both firmware and maps are old
For MMI 3G systems in particular, buying the complete bundle is usually the simplest option.
It avoids having to identify and purchase the firmware, maps and activation components independently.
Understanding Audi MIB2 updates
MIB2 causes more confusion than most earlier Audi systems because three separate things are involved.
1. Firmware
This is the operating software of the infotainment unit.
2. Navigation database
These are the actual road and POI data.
3. Map license / FEC
This determines whether the unit is permitted to activate the installed map release.
Updating one does not automatically update the other two.
For example, an Audi A5 may already have current enough MHI2 firmware but still reject new navigation maps because the required entitlement is missing.

Selecting files by registration year
The year is useful, but it is not enough.
