How to Change the Audi MMI 3G Splash Screen

The startup image displayed when Audi MMI loads is commonly called the splash screen or boot logo. On compatible MMI 3G systems, it can be replaced with a custom image using an SD card and the MMI 3G Splash Screen Changer Script.

This procedure supports compatible versions of:

  • MMI 3G Basic,
  • MMI 3G High,
  • MMI 3G Plus.

It does not apply to MIB1, MIB2, MIB3, RMC, MMI 2G or current touchscreen systems.

What you need

Prepare:

  • a compatible MMI 3G Splash Screen Changer Script,
  • an SD card with at least 1 GB capacity,
  • a computer with an SD card reader,
  • an image editor,
  • a correctly sized splash-screen image.

The script is available here:

A card of 32 GB or less formatted as FAT32 is a practical choice for MMI 3G. Back up any files already stored on the card before formatting it.

Correct MMI splash screen resolution

The image dimensions depend on the MMI version.

MMI 3G High and MMI 3G Plus

Use:

800 × 480 pixels

MMI 3G Basic

Use:

400 × 240 pixels

Do not use the MMI 3G High or Plus resolution on MMI 3G Basic. A file with the wrong dimensions may not be installed correctly or may display incorrectly.

Changing the file extension does not resize the image. Resize and export it properly with an image editor.

Identify the MMI system first

Do not choose the image resolution based only on the Audi model or production year. Similar vehicles can have different infotainment systems.

Check the complete MMI software version before preparing the files:

Typical MMI 3G software prefixes include:

  • BNav_ for MMI 3G Basic,
  • HNav_ for MMI 3G High,
  • HN+_ or HN+R_ for MMI 3G Plus.

Always use the complete version shown by the system when confirming compatibility.

Prepare the custom splash screen

Create or resize the image using a graphics editor.

The image must match the exact resolution required by the MMI:

  • 800 × 480 px for MMI 3G High and Plus,
  • 400 × 240 px for MMI 3G Basic.

Keep important logos and text away from the extreme edges. Avoid very small lettering because it may be difficult to read on the MMI display.

Use the same filename and file format as the example splash-screen files included with the script. Do not rename unrelated script files.

Prepare the SD card

Download the supplied archive and extract it completely.

Copy the extracted files directly to the root directory of the SD card. Do not copy the entire downloaded archive or add an unnecessary parent folder.

The correct structure should place the script files and required folders at the top level of the card.

MMI 3G splash screen SD card root directory

The custom image must be placed in the folder named:

splashscreens

Splash screens backup

If example images are included, replace the appropriate example file with the new image while preserving the required filename, extension and resolution.

Install the splash screen

Use the following procedure:

  1. Switch on the ignition or accessory mode, not only the MMI screen.
  2. Wait until the MMI has fully started.
  3. Confirm that functions such as radio, navigation and media are operational.
  4. Insert the prepared SD card into the MMI SD card slot.
  5. Wait for the script screen to appear.
  6. Press the MMI centre control knob to start the script when prompted.
  7. Confirm the next script screen with the centre control knob if requested.
  8. Allow the script to complete.
  9. Wait at least 60 seconds after completion.
  10. Eject and remove the SD card.
  11. Restart the MMI.

Do not remove the card or switch off the ignition while the script is processing files.

Restart MMI 3G

On many MMI 3G control panels, the system can be restarted by pressing the following three controls simultaneously:

  • TONE,
  • the centre control knob,
  • the upper-right soft key.

Button layouts differ between vehicles. Use the restart combination appropriate for the installed MMI control panel.

After the restart, the new splash screen should appear while the system is loading.

Original splash-screen backup

The script creates a backup of the existing splash screens before installing the replacements.

The backup can be found in the following folder on the SD card:

backup

MMI 3G original splash screen backup folder

Do not delete this folder. Store an additional copy on a computer so the original splash screen can be restored later.

If the script does not start

Check the following:

  • the system is genuinely MMI 3G Basic, High or Plus,
  • the SD card is readable by the MMI,
  • the downloaded archive was fully extracted,
  • the script files are in the root directory,
  • there is no additional parent folder,
  • the ignition is on,
  • the MMI has finished starting before inserting the card,
  • the script matches the installed MMI version.

Try the other SD card slot if the vehicle has two slots and the supplied instructions permit it.

Do not run scripts intended for a different MMI generation.

If the new splash screen does not appear

Verify that:

  • the image has the correct pixel dimensions,
  • the correct example file was replaced,
  • its filename and extension were preserved,
  • the image is inside the splashscreens folder,
  • the script completed without an error,
  • the SD card was removed before restarting,
  • the MMI was fully restarted rather than only switching the display off.

If necessary, restore the original files from the backup created by the script.

Compatibility summary

This procedure is intended only for compatible Audi MMI 3G systems:

  • MMI 3G Basic: 400 × 240 px,
  • MMI 3G High: 800 × 480 px,
  • MMI 3G Plus: 800 × 480 px.

The exact software version must be checked before purchasing or running the script. Do not assume compatibility based only on the vehicle model.

This works great. There are a few steps that caught me up when applying the update, below is what I used on an Audi A1 3G+ system:

  1. SD card less than 32gb and formatted as FAT.
  2. Start the “acc” of the car not just have the MMI on.
  3. Wait for all functions (maps, radio, media etc.) to be operational and then insert the SD card (it worked in SD2 for me).
  4. Press the center button to run the script.
  5. Press it again at the next splash screen that comes up.
  6. Wait 60 seconds.
  7. Eject the SD card and remove from SD card slot.
  8. Press “Tone” + “Center” + upper right soft button.
  9. Your new splash should now be loaded!
