Updating Audi MIB2 firmware is straightforward once you have identified the exact infotainment platform and selected the correct firmware train.
This guide is specifically for Audi MIB2 High systems using MHI2 or MHI2Q software trains.
Do not use this procedure for MMI 3G, RMC, MIB1, MHS2, MH2p or MIB3 unless the instructions supplied with your specific firmware explicitly say otherwise.
Before downloading or installing anything, check the complete firmware version shown in the Red Engineering Menu (REM).
Typical compatible software trains include:
MHI2_ER_AU57x_…
MHI2_ER_AUG11_…
MHI2_ER_AUG22_…
MHI2Q_ER_AUG22_…
MHI2_US_AU57x_…
MHI2_US_AUG22_…
MHI2Q_US_AUG22_…
If you do not know which Audi infotainment system you have, use our complete Audi MMI identification guide:
Please remember that if you just started your car, you might need to wait couple of minutes to all systems go up and they are ready to use – otherwise you will not be able to enter REM or GEM.
From main menu

Press and hold correct combination to enter REM

When you are in this Red Engineering Menu (REM) scroll down and go inside Version information.

Current version will show you your current firmware version.
If you have MHI2 or MHI2Q, this manual it’s for you!
Check the Correct MIB2 Firmware Before Updating
The complete firmware train is more important than the final version number.
For example, these are different software families:
MHI2_ER_AU57x_
MHI2_ER_AUG22_
MHI2Q_ER_AUG22_
A firmware package intended for one train must not automatically be used on another train simply because its version number is higher.
Always compare the complete current train with the target firmware before starting the update.
If you already know your current version, use our Audi MMI compatibility checker:
Here’s a list for most current firmware updates:
Europe / RoW
- MHI2_ER_AUG22_K3344 MU1438
- MHI2Q_ER_AUG22_P5092 MU1329
- MHI2_ER_AU57x_K3663 – firmware update with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto
- MHI2_ER_AUG11_P0040 MU0335
USA / Canada
IMPORTANT
Do not mix the firmwares I mean, if your car have MHI2_ER_AUG22_xxx you cannot install MHI2_ER_AUG35 or MHI2Q_ER_AUG22 – you need to pay attention for first type MHI2/MHI2Q and AUG/AU57
So if you have:
- MHI2_ER_AUG22_P0010 you can install only MHI2_ER_AUG22_K3344
Do Not Change Firmware Train Unless the Procedure Specifically Requires It
Do not treat a change between AU57x, AUG11, AUG22, MHI2 and MHI2Q as a normal firmware update.
If the target firmware uses a different train from the software currently installed in the unit, verify the required procedure before continuing.
A higher firmware number does not mean that the package is compatible with your MIB2 unit.
If you worry about choosing correct firmware, send us your current firmware and we will send you correct links.
How to Download and Extract MIB2 Firmware Files
Firmware packages may be distributed as a single archive or as a multi-part 7-Zip archive.
For example:
firmware.7z.001
firmware.7z.002
firmware.7z.003
firmware.7z.004
All parts must be downloaded completely and stored in the same folder before extraction.
When using a multi-part archive, start extraction from the .7z.001 file only. The extraction program will automatically read the remaining parts.
To unpack files you will need 7zip application – you can download it from 7zip.org for free.
When you have already installed 7zip, go to the firmware files. Click on first file (with ending: 7z.001) with right mouse click and select Extract to “filename…”

This might take some time to unpack the files. Do not touch other parts (7z.002/003 etc) this is one big archive in multiple files, only need to unpack 7z.001 – but need to download ALL parts before unpacking!!
then you can start preparing SD CARD.
How to Prepare the SD Card for an Audi MIB2 Firmware Update
Use a reliable SD card with enough free space for the complete firmware package. An 8 GB or 16 GB card is sufficient for many MIB2 firmware packages, although the required capacity depends on the update.
For firmware packages supplied for this procedure, FAT32 is normally the safest filesystem choice unless the instructions included with your specific update state otherwise.
After extracting the archive, copy the update contents directly to the root of the SD card.
Do not create an additional parent folder.
Correct:
For macOS users please take a look here (click)
When you have formatted your SD CARD to FAT32 now you need to copy files on to SD.
To do that, go inside newly unpacked files – you should see new folder with files inside:

or sometimes like that:

all you need to do now is select all those files (1, 2 metainfo2) and copy directly on to SD CARD.
THOSE FILES MUST BE DIRECTLY ON SD, WITHOUT ANY PARENT FOLDER. WHEN YOU ENTER SD YOU MUST SEE ABOVE FILES DIRECTLY
This process might take up to 15 minutes – depends on how fast is your SD CARD. After moving files, you can jump to the car (do not forget to take your SD with maps).
Audi MMI Mib2 firmware update
Before beginning the update:
- confirm the complete current firmware train,
- confirm that the target firmware is compatible,
- read the complete installation procedure,
- make sure the SD card is prepared correctly,
- remove unnecessary USB or SD devices,
- ensure stable vehicle voltage,
- and do not start the process if the battery condition is uncertain.
A firmware update may take tens of minutes and the infotainment system can restart several times.
Using suitable battery support is strongly recommended during longer software updates.
Do not remove the update media or interrupt power while firmware is being installed.
If you have bose audio system please do this first!
Vehicles equipped with an external BOSE amplifier require additional attention during some MIB2 firmware updates.
Do not update amplifier datasets unless the firmware package and installation instructions specifically require it.
Installing an incorrect amplifier dataset can result in audio problems after the firmware update.
If your supplied firmware package already excludes the external amplifier from the update, follow the instructions included with that package.
If manual component selection is required, use User Defined mode only when you understand which component must be excluded.
If you have bought this bundle pack (click) or this firmware which have apple carplay / android auto activation (click) you can skip this step – bose has been disabled by default.
You can use fibre optic loop part no.: 4E0973802 / 4E0 973 802
you need to locate Bose amplifier in boot, disconnect cable and connect this loop to the cable disconnected from bose amplifier.
You can also try enter Green engineering menu (GEM) go to the swdl and tick the User defined mode

Insert your SD CARD with firmware update in to SD1 slot.

after that enter the REM (Red Engineering Menu)

But now need to select Update option

in another screen select SD CARD 1

now MMI will scan the SD CARD and if it’s prepared correctly it will show you the firmware update, in another screens
If you have bose audio system (for standard audi audio do not need to do this)
in next screen need select User Defined, then on next list try to find BoseG3_Q7 or BoseG3_ or BSG3C7_ANC or BO_Q7 / BO_D4 / BO_C7 / AMP_LC_P (depends of car model you have, always will be starting with BSG/Bose/BO) and take every tick off until there is a letter N near Bose. To do it, you need to enter to this item, and change near all items to N in all second rows. So, finally near Bose should stand N.
This is very important – don’t forget to make it. and click Start download.
Update process will take around 20-30 minutes. Do not leave the car alone, do not turn off. Just wait.
MMI will reboot automatically few times.
What to Check After the MIB2 Firmware Update
After the update has completed and the MMI has restarted, verify:
- the new firmware version in Version Information,
- sound from all speakers,
- BOSE / Bang & Olufsen operation if equipped,
- Bluetooth connection,
- navigation,
- radio,
- media playback,
- Apple CarPlay / Android Auto if previously activated,
- and any warning or error messages.
Remember that a firmware update does not automatically activate Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or navigation licences.
If another activation is part of your upgrade package, complete it only after the firmware update has finished successfully.
“Train Is Blocked” During an Audi MIB2 Firmware Update
If the MMI displays a “Train is blocked” message, do not repeatedly retry the same firmware installation.
This normally means that the unit is not accepting the requested software train through the standard update path.
Check:
- the complete current firmware version,
- the target firmware train,
- whether the update changes between software branches,
- and whether a system-specific intermediate or alternative update procedure is required.
Do not try random firmware packages to bypass the message.
If you need help, send us the complete firmware version shown in the Red Engineering Menu so the correct update path can be checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Audi has MIB2?
Check the complete software version in the Red Engineering Menu. MIB2 systems covered by this guide normally use MHI2 or MHI2Q software trains.
Can I install MHI2Q firmware on an MHI2 unit?
No. MHI2 and MHI2Q should be treated as different firmware families. Use firmware compatible with the complete train installed in your unit.
Can I install MHI2_ER_AUG22 firmware on MHI2_ER_AU57x?
Do not change between firmware trains unless a verified procedure specifically requires it. Check compatibility before starting the update.
How long does an Audi MIB2 firmware update take?
The duration depends on the firmware package and components being updated. Allow enough time for the process to complete and maintain stable vehicle voltage throughout the installation.
Why does my Audi MIB2 say “Train is blocked”?
The unit may be rejecting the requested firmware train or update path. Verify the current and target software versions before trying another installation.
Does updating MIB2 firmware activate Apple CarPlay?
Not automatically. Firmware and CarPlay / Android Auto activation are separate procedures, although a particular firmware version may be required before activation.
Do I need an SD card for an MIB2 firmware update?
Many Audi MIB2 firmware procedures use an SD card. Follow the instructions supplied for the exact firmware package.
Should I update the BOSE amplifier during an MIB2 firmware update?
Only if the specific firmware procedure explicitly requires it. Incorrect amplifier datasets can cause audio problems.

I ordered the MHI2_US_AU57X_K3341 apply CarPlay update for my a7, I chose to have sd card sent to me, is sd card option ready to be installed or do I need computer to prepare it before installation?
Just tried to update and got “train is blocked error”
After searching for over a year for an upgrade to my A6 2018 I finally landed on the right place. I have just bought the software for android auto and have upgraded successfully. It all went like a breeze, within 30 minutes it was all up and running. Very much pleased with the interface. Bravo!!!!!
