How to check what Audi MMI do I have? MMI 2G, 3G, 3G+ ? – Types of Audi navigation systems

Different types of Audi navigation systems have been found depending on the model, the vintage and the car’s equipment. Most of these systems show the initial screen with the name “Audi Multi Media Interface”, and they have a very similar menu appearance. As a result, they are often considered one and the same system.

Audi has in offer several navigation and multimedia systems, such as BNS 4.x, BNS 5.x, MMI 2G Low / Basic, MMI 2G High, MMI 3G Low / Basic, MMI 3G High, MMI 3G + , Audi RMC, RNS-D, RNS-E, RNS-E 2010, Audi Concert, Audi Chorus, Audi Symphony.

Types of Audi navigation systems – What Audi MMI do I have?

The easiest way is to check the software version that is loaded in the system. To do this, enter the car menu by pressing the CAR button, then press SETUP or MENU, then select the “Version” submenu and read the value from the line marked with the letters “SW“.

On newest cars there’s a different red engineering menu (REM) access key scheme

In older cars (mostly up to 2016) to enter Red Engineering Menu you can use one of below key shortcuts.

If you see something like this:

Where is no full firmware version, then you need to exit red engineering menu (same buttons like you enter it)

Go to the main car settings, and try to find Software version information (might be in settings tab)

• MMI 3G+: HN+_XX_XXXXX or HN+R

  Mostly in Audi A1 (2011-2018), Audi A4(2013-17), Audi A5(2009-18), Audi Q3(2015-19), Audi Q5(2013-2018), Audi Q7(2013-2018), A6(2012-16), A7(2012-16), and A8(2011-19)

• MMI RMC: RMC_XX_XXXXX

  Mostly in Audi A1 (2010-2018), Audi A3 (2013-2018), Audi A6 (2011-2017), Audi A7 (2010-2017), Audi Q3 (2011-2018)

  Mostly in Audi A3 (2013 – 2017)

  Mostly in Audi A3

  Mostly in Audi A4 (2017 – 2019), Audi A6 (2017 – 2019), Audi A7 (2017 – 2019), Audi A8 (2018 – 2019)

Important note about firmware updates and choosing correct firmware.

When you are looking for updates, make sure you are selecting correct one. Check first what firmware you have, look at the beginning of the name, and if you have for example HN+_EU_AU3G_P0432 you need to get newest firmware (which mostly means higher end number) which for this moment for above it’s HN+_EU_AU3G_K0942. Only Audi A6 C7 and Audi A8 D4 in their very first production year had firmware starting from HN+_XX but when looking for updates needs to get HN+R (Audi has change firmware name for A6/A8).
