Audi Google Earth Not Working – Why Older MMI Systems Lost Support

If Google Earth has disappeared from your Audi MMI, is greyed out, or stopped loading satellite imagery, the first thing to understand is that this is not necessarily a navigation map failure or a firmware problem.

On many older Audi infotainment systems, the original Google Earth integration reached the end of its supported life after changes to the online service and compatibility requirements.

However, this does not mean that Google Earth disappeared from every Audi.

Newer Audi infotainment systems still use Google Earth satellite imagery as part of supported Audi connect navigation services. Audi continues to describe Google Earth navigation on current-generation systems.

The important distinction is:

Older Audi Google Earth implementation
→ support ended / compatibility lost

Newer supported Audi systems
→ Google Earth can still be available

If your older Audi previously displayed Google Earth and the option is now:

• greyed out
• permanently unavailable
• unable to load new satellite imagery

then installing newer navigation maps will normally not restore the old Google Earth online service.

Your standard Audi navigation can still continue working using its normal map database.

Google Earth satellite imagery is an additional online layer — it is not the navigation database itself.

Did Audi Completely Stop Supporting Google Earth?

No.

This is the biggest correction to the old version of this article.

Audi still advertises Google Earth satellite imagery on newer infotainment platforms and current Audi connect Navigation & Infotainment services.

What happened was that the older implementation became incompatible with the newer Google service.

Audi USA previously advised owners that older hardware, particularly MY2018 and earlier vehicles, would lose Google Earth functionality by the end of 2020 because the older systems could not support the updated service.

That historical notice is the reason many older Audi owners suddenly lost the Google Earth map layer while normal navigation continued to work.

Google Earth vs Standard Audi Navigation

These are separate things.

Standard navigation

Uses the navigation database stored or installed in the MMI.

It provides:

• roads
• routes
• junctions
• addresses
• POIs
• navigation instructions

Google Earth

Provides an additional online satellite-image layer.

So you can have:

Google Earth unavailable
+
normal Audi navigation fully working

This is completely possible.

A Google Earth failure does not automatically mean your maps are damaged.

Will Updating the Navigation Maps Restore Google Earth?

Normally, no.

A map update updates:

navigation database

It does not restore a discontinued or incompatible online Google Earth service.

If your normal maps are outdated, updating them is still worthwhile — but do not buy a map update specifically because the old Google Earth layer disappeared.

Will an MMI Firmware Update Restore Google Earth?

Again, not normally on hardware that is no longer supported by the old online service.

Firmware can change:

• MMI software
• stability
• compatibility
• functions supported by the hardware

but it cannot automatically make an older infotainment platform compatible with an online service that now requires different hardware or backend support.

So do not repeatedly install different firmware versions hoping that Google Earth will return.

“But Google Earth Worked Before My Firmware Update”

This is one of the most common reports.

There are two possibilities.

1. Cached imagery was still stored in the MMI

Older MMI systems could retain previously downloaded map imagery.

That means after an update you may notice:

old familiar areas
→ previously displayed

new areas
→ no imagery downloaded

and conclude that the firmware update disabled Google Earth.

In reality, the online service may already have stopped working while some cached imagery remained available.

2. The feature really changed during the update

This is also possible in specific configurations.

If Google Earth stopped immediately after software work, check:

• exact MMI version
• firmware installed
• Green Menu settings where applicable
• Audi connect configuration
• whether the online services themselves are still available for that platform

Do not automatically assume either:

firmware caused it

or:

service shutdown caused it

without checking the system.

Google Earth Is Greyed Out

A greyed-out Google Earth option can have several meanings depending on the MMI generation.

On older systems it may be caused by:

Older Audi systems can include software prefixes such as:

HN+_
HN+R_

used with MMI 3G Plus.

Some vehicles had:

• factory SIM support
• Audi connect
• Wi-Fi
• Google Earth
• online traffic services

while other MMI 3G Plus configurations did not have the same communication hardware.

But in the context of the discontinued legacy Google Earth functionality, an inability to obtain the required online imagery/data may produce symptoms that do not indicate physical MMI memory failure.

Do not replace an MMI hard drive or head unit solely because Google Earth stopped loading.

Does Google Earth Use the Same Maps as Audi Navigation?

No.

The satellite-image layer and the routable navigation database are different sources/functions.

You may therefore have:

fresh Audi navigation database

no Google Earth satellite imagery

There is no contradiction.

What About Google Street View?

Older Audi connect implementations also offered various Google-based online features depending on the vehicle and market.

Do not assume that because standard navigation works, every historical online Google feature will still work.

Yes.

Audi connect still exists on current vehicles and provides a wide range of connected services.

Current Audi documentation continues to list Google Earth navigation as part of Audi connect Navigation & Infotainment on supported newer systems.

Could an Expired Audi Connect Subscription Be the Problem?

On a supported newer Audi, subscription/service status can absolutely matter for online functions.

But on an older platform whose original Google Earth implementation is no longer supported, renewing unrelated services does not necessarily restore the historical Google Earth integration.

Check:

• vehicle generation

• country
• available Audi connect package
• current service status

before paying for anything.

Can I Get Google Maps Instead?

Yes — and for many older Audis this is now the more practical solution.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can provide:

• Google Maps
• Waze
• Apple Maps
• live traffic
• current POIs
• voice navigation

using a smartphone.

Does CarPlay Restore Google Earth in the Audi Navigation?

No.

CarPlay/Android Auto does not restore the old factory Google Earth layer.

It provides an alternative navigation interface.

These are separate systems.
